How To Use Outlook.com With Thunderbird

Webmail is great. You can use it anywhere, as long as you are online. When you use Outlook.com with Thunderbird, that restriction goes away. You can read and compose email and calendar events offline. As soon as you connect to the Internet again, your newly composed email will be sent and your online email and calendars will be synced again. Just the ticket for working while on long flights.

And working offline is not the only advantage. By integrating your Outlook.com with Thunderbird, you can store email and calendar backups anywhere you like – to your hard drive, a USB flash drive, or even in the cloud. You can easily add events to other calendars. Thunderbird is much quicker than Outlook.com online.  And mailto: links will work just as they are meant to. They will open a new Thunderbird email window with the email address in the “To” field.

Configuring Outlook.com with Thunderbird:

Update, 11/5/2017 — In a timely surprise, the author of the add-on TbSync,  John Bieling, posted a most welcome comment to let me know that the newest version ( as of a week ago, no longer has an Outllook.com server configuration profile, but instead automatically detects the correct settings from an Outlook.com email address. I have replaced slides 19 and 20, below to reflect the changes.

With Thunderbird, you can set up Gmail, Google Calendar, and POP3 accounts in addition to Outlook.com, all within the same Thunderbird profile. I use Thunderbird for several accounts.

The latest version of TbSync no longer has a dedicated “outlook.com” server profile, but finds the needed settings using automatic configuration.

Thanks for commenting John. I’ll update my slides. I must have written this using an older version of TbSync. When did the change happen?

About one week ago 🙂 The Add-On is still under development and I will continue to update it “under the hood”, but this change would have distracted your users, because they will no longer find the “outlook.com” setting.
