Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? But it is. You can safely download a legally licensed copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2016, directly from Microsoft for $9.95 through the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP). That is 97.5% off the retail price of $399.00!
There are no gimmicks, but there is a catch or two. The company or organization where you work must be a Microsoft volume licensing customer with active Software Assurance coverage on their Office applications. The other catch? Your license is only valid as long as you work there.
These obstacles are not that big. If your company has more than 5 employees using Microsoft Office, there is more than a good chance they are already a Microsoft volume license customer with Software Assurance. Ask your IT department if they are and if they have signed up for HUP.
If they are eligible for HUP, but not signed up, ask them to. Send then this link – Software Assurance Home Use Program, it will explain everything they need to do. If your company is eligible, they should be happy to take part in the Home Use Program. And why not? They will probably get a little extra work from you if you have the same tools at home as you do in the office.
When your company signs up for HUP, they have to appoint someone to manage the Home Use Program. That person (benefits administrator) can give you the assigned HUP program code for your organization. Once you have the code, go to Microsoft Home Use Program, enter your company email address and the HUP program code. Then you can pay $9.95 to download the software.
If your company is not eligible for HUP and you still need an office suite, I highly recommend LibreOffice. It is free, open source software. It is compatible with Microsoft Office files, and there are no ads or gimmicks.
